Cake smash sessions are a fun way to celebrate the milestone of your little baby turning ONE! It is a milestone photo shoot that typically occurs when the child turns one year old where they are presented with a cake to eat or smash or both or none if I am being honest 🙂
If you’d like to use your portraits to display at baby’s birthday party I recommend having your session take place when baby is 10 1/2-11 months old. This will give you time to make prints and order any products that you’d like to display.
Because there are so many different food allergies out there these days (dairy, wheat, sugar, etc) I always ask that my clients provide the cake. This gives you full control over what’s inside of the cake!
CAKE SMASH SESSION (1st Birthday session) includes 10 artistically retouched digital images.
You have probably noticed, I do not do themed cake smashes. My cake smashes are simple, organic with an all white or cream background, some fresh or artificial flowers and greenery.
Cake Smash session last about 90 minutes. The first hour is comprised of milestone pictures, in which I capture the personality of your little one in a variety of different sets. I typically have time to get through 2-3 outfits depending on the cooperation of our subject.
If the baby has an older brother or sister or both, I will be more than happy to photograph them together.
If the baby does not have a sibling, I will photograph the baby with their parents.
I always LOVE taking the “ONE year difference photo” . It is my favorite to see babies growth and how much they have changed over the year.
The last 30 minutes is the cake smash. I let your baby set the pace, as some little ones dig right in and destroy the cake, and others need a little bit of encouragement and sometimes even help to get into their cake. Be ready to get your hands dirty and help your little one get past all that frosting to the cake underneath!
The biggest tip I can give to any Mom planning a cake smash session is to relax. Little ones can sense stress and we want them to come into a happy, positive environment! Baby is the one who is really running the show!
